Add a southwest flair to your contemporary home with the graphic designs of hand-woven tribal rugs. Tribal rugs take symbols from Native American weaving and from nomadic tribes around the world. Some convey a primitive look while others are stylized patterns, and may come in stripes or vertical designs. Southwest style area rugs pair well with contemporary and modern furniture. Tribal rugs tend to make a grand statement in Contemporary Southwest interior design.
Tribal rugs are handmade by nomadic people of villages or tribes. The craft can be found in Pakistan, Turkey, India and Iran.
There are also Southwest style area rugs that are influenced by tribal rugs. They are distinctive in both design and construction but are mostly geometric in design. The simple striped designs from the eighteenth century evolved and became more complex when the settlers arrived in the Southwest with Middle Eastern rugs. Native Americans then made a blended design that incorporated some of the elements of the Middle Eastern rugs.
Southwest style area rugs are available in many different constructions.
- Hand-made flat woven tapestry weaves
- Hand-knotted pile rugs
- Hand-tufted rugs
- Hand-hooked rugs
Southwest style area rugs are made of many different natural materials.
- 100% wool
- Wool blends
- Cotton
- Jute
Here are a few examples of tribal and southwest style rugs from AZADI Fine Rugs that would complement Contemporary Southwest Style decor.
