Area Rugs: Be Adventurous with Shapes and Materials

By: David Neishabori

If you are looking for an area rug for your home, there are a number of things to consider. You will, of course, want a rug that will be aesthetically pleasing, and one that will complement your décor, but have you thought about what material will work best in your home? What about shape?

Area rugs come in a variety of shapes and materials and finding the one that suits your home will make all the difference in how it helps your design to come together.  With that in mind, here are some shapes and materials of rugs that will allow you to decide which is the ideal choice for your home.

The shape you choose for your rug will depend on a few factors. If you want your rug to fit into a certain space in your home, you will want to go with a shape that works within that space.

If you are looking for a rug to go under a certain piece of furniture or a group of furniture, you will want a rug that will complement the furniture’s shape. For instance, a square dining room table will work best with a square rug under it, while a circular table will go well with a round rug.

Here are some options you can choose from:

Rectangle: Rectangular rugs are the most common types of rugs. You can find them in a variety of materials, prints, and styles.

Runner Rugs: Runner rugs are also rectangular but are their length is much greater than their width making them long and narrow in shape. They are great for lining a hallway or any other elongated space.

Round: Round rugs make great centerpieces and can work as a focal point in any room. They can also work well under circular shaped furniture or sets that can be positioned in a round configuration.

Square Rugs: Like rectangular rugs, square rugs come in a variety of styles and patterns. They are great for filling a small room or working as decorative elements near furniture and doorways.

Oval: Oval rugs can make an interesting contrast in rooms that are rectangular in shape. Their lack of corners makes them more versatile than their rectangular counterparts.

Octagon: A bit more adventurous in shape, an octagonal rug fills a similar role to that of the circular rug. It works well under round furniture and its sharp angles and straight sides offer different placement opportunities.

Materials

Material: When it comes to choosing a material for your rug, you want to go with one that gives your home the look you want, but one that will also be durable. Rugs that will be walked on frequently need to come in durable materials whereas more delicate fabrics can be used for rugs that are more decorative. Keeping that in mind, here are some of your options when it comes to area rug materials.

Wool: Wool is a common rug material due to the fact that itis durable and easy to care for. Wool is an all-natural material.  It dyes easily making it available in a number of color options.

Because wool is dense, it repels liquid. It will eventually absorb moisture, but it will take a while to do this giving you plenty of time to clean the spill before staining occurs.

Cotton Rugs: Cotton is another natural fiber commonly found in handmade area rugs. Like wool, it dyes easily so that is available in a number of color options.

Cotton rugs are usually found in flat-weave styles. They are fairly durable and tend to be less expensive than wool rugs making them a good option for families on a budget.

Jute and Sisal Rugs: Often used in handmade rugs, these materials are tough and durable. This allows for textures and weaves other fibers can not achieve. They make a good alternative for wool for someone with wool allergies.

Although these rugs are durable and attractive, the material is coarse and rough on your feet as compared to cotton and wool. Also, because they absorb moisture quickly, removing stains can be a little more difficult.

Silk and Viscose Rugs: These are soft, easy to dye and absorbent. They are versatile providing a beautiful sheen and an illusion of depth.  However, they are a little less durable than wool. It is best to combine them with wool to increase their durability.

Now that you know a bit about your options when purchasing a new rug.  Hopefully, this will help you be prepared the next time you are making an area rug purchase. The shape and material of your rug will really make a difference in where it should be placed and how it will work with your home décor.
