Open just about any magazine and you’ll see one thing in common lately; Chic rooms designed around Moroccan style rugs. Just when we think the trend is starting to die down, we get another request for a rug that is versatile, soft, vintage looking, contemporary, eclectic, geometric, easy to clean. The Moroccan style rug is an easy go-to that satisfies this criteria.
According to style writer Elizabeth Mayhew for The Washington Post, “Moroccan rug designs originated from the Beni Ourain people, who comprise 17 Berber tribes from the Atlas Mountains. These rugs have distinctive designs, which range from ordered geometric shapes to more free-form, expressive patterns. They almost always are in a neutral palette (usually they have an ivory background with brown or black geometric lines), and they have a shaggy pile.”
These Moroccan style area rugs are popular because they are neutral and add a lot of texture to a room. They complement both modern and traditional décor. At AZADI Fine Rugs we offer Moroccan style rugs in a variety of sizes and colors.
Read below to find out why the Moroccan rug trend is sticking around:
1) Versatility
Classic Moroccan rugs are characterized by a minimalist design that is suitable for almost any style of décor – no matter if we are talking about a an eclectic NYC loft, an Arcadia mid-century modern re-do, a mountain modern retreat in Jackson Hole, or a contemporary masterpiece in Desert Mountain. The most recognizable pattern of a traditional Moroccan rug is an allover pattern of quite large, loosely designed diamonds in dark brown or black against the ivory background.
You may think the motifs in Moroccan rugs are carelessly woven but that is far from the truth. Each imperfection is actually on purpose and represents the weaver’s humility as they express in life that, “Nothing in life perfect, except from God.” Moroccan rugs will easily fit into any interior design project. They are charming, universal and woven with meaning.
2) Value
Antique and Vintage Moroccan rugs are actually true, collectible pieces of art that will only increase in value over time. Roaming Berber tribes that inhabited the Atlas Mountains developed these distinctive art forms in the process of adjusting to the harsh conditions. These weaving tribes have mostly been preoccupied with sheep herding – the source of their excellent, high grade wool. This largely contributed to the quality of their textiles which was crucial for the good preservation of heat and the protection from wind and sand because originally, these Berber rugs were used as bedspreads, blankets and covers rather than decorative elements. A purchase of an original antique Moroccan rug is an investment that will enhance any contemporary décor with a touch of a genuine ethnic craft.
3) Dynamic Color
One type of Moroccan style rug is known as a “Boucherouite” rug. Their designs are simple and geometric but what sets them apart is the method of making. Traditional Boucherouites were in fact rag rugs made from the leftover scraps of fabric, and constituted a fantastic and resourceful way of recycling. This resulted in a distinction from the toned and neutral traditional Moroccan rugs. Today, Berber women continue the tradition, crafting the rugs in an eye-popping array of colors and wild patterns. The colorful version of Moroccan rugs is perfect for nurseries and children rooms. The creative patterns and vivid colors lend an imaginative feel to a playful space.
4) Timelessness & Durability
Moroccan rugs have years of history behind them yet they remain at the forefront of the world’s favorite interior design elements. In addition, their true elegance goes hand in hand with quality. Because they are made of high quality wool they are resistant to dirt, and can be easily cleaned. Hand-knotted in accordance with centuries-old techniques, these Berber masterpieces are characterized by firm structure and durability. If properly maintained, they will serve their owners for generations without any signs of wear.
