When you think about a bedroom area rug, the first thing you envision is waking up in the morning and sinking your feet into a soft, luxurious surface.  This, however, is not the primary function of a bedroom rug.  Not only will a bedroom area rug lend a cozy feel to the space, it will add texture, add a safe, non-slip area to walk and soften the sound of the room by preventing and echo.

If you are looking to add personality, color and pattern to your décor or tie everything together, make a big statement in your bedroom, an area rug is a fantastic choice.

Before you purchase a rug for your bedroom there are a few things to consider.  How much space do you have, what style, texture, and pattern appeals to you, and what is your budget?  The first place to start is to determine the size of the rug.

The bed is the main focus of the bedroom so it is important that the rug fit/compliment the size of the bed.  To make sure you step onto the bed when you wake up in the morning (or the middle of the night…), your rug should extend about 2-3 feet from your bed.  Take these measurements into consideration when shopping for a bedroom area rug:

King Size: 76” x 80”

California King: 72” x 84”

Queen Size: 60” x 80”

Full Size: 54” x 75”

Twin Size: 39” x 75”

You will also want to take into account that the frame will extend a few inches beyond the size of the mattress.

Here are our suggestions choosing the best size rug to accommodate your bed size:

King Size: A standard 8’ x 10’ area rug will give you a nice area to step onto when getting out of bed.  This will come right to the edge of your nightstands but not under them.  A California King will require at least a     9’ x 12’ rug.  Pick a rug with an interesting border to frame your bed.  If you would like the rug to go under your nightstands, you will need to go up to size 9’ x 12’ for a King and a 12’ x 15’ for a California King.  Another option is to have the rug stop just before the nightstands and extend out from the end of the bed.  This look works well if you have a bench or some sort of seating at the end of the bed.

Queen Size: You may keep the same recommendations as for a King size bed if your room is spacious enough to accommodate them.  After all, the rug makes a huge statement, so bigger is better!  If your room is on the smaller size, the ideal size for a Queen size bed is 6’ x 9’.  To extend the rug under the nightstands an 8’ x 10’ will work nicely.

Full Size: With a full size bed it will depend on the placement.  Occasionally, a full size be is pushed up against the wall.  If this is the case, a smaller rug will work placed next to the bed.  If you decided to place the area rug under the bed, a 6’ x 9’ will work.  To go under the nightstands, use an 8’ x 10’ size rug.

Twin Bed/Beds: You have several options for choosing a rug for a bedroom with a twin size (or two twin size beds.)  For a small room, a 5’ x 8’ area rug is effective.  If the bed is against the wall, a smaller rug (4’ x 6’ or 3’ x 5’) placed next to the bed will look nice.  If you have two twin beds in the room, placing a rug between the beds works well.  Try a 4’ x 6’ or 3’ x 5’ rug for this placement.

You could also use a large area rug (8’ x 10’ or 9’ x 12’ under the two beds to unify the space.)
