AZADI Navajo Rugs is the most recent addition to the AZADI Fine Rugs family. A passion for the unique history of the Navajo people, combined with a motivation to cultivate and preserve the dying art of the Navajo culture led to the creation of AZADI Navajo Rugs. Visit our resident Navajo rug expert Richard Harvey to learn about acquiring a traditional Navajo weaving for your home.   Gallery director, Richard Harvey has worked for years to establish relationships with traditional weavers.  Once such weaver is Maggie Mannie.

Maggie Mannie, 83, has been creating stunning woven pieces her entire life. The proud women of the Diné, honor the old ways, creating enduring treasures of beauty and desire. The Master Weavers’ pride in their ancestors has kept their culture alive. They are the driving force behind the preservation of language, religion, the tribe’s customs, and the creation of spectacular rugs using traditional design methods. Finely woven textiles that seduce the eye, invite the touch, and enchant the heart.

Maggie was born in 1932 in Jeddito , Arizona, a tiny town in the Navajo Nation 100 miles northeast of Flagstaff. Navajo legend has it that weaving was taught to them by Spider Woman. When Navajo girls are born, their hands and arms are rubbed with spider webs from a spider hole so that their hands and arms do not tire from the hard work and long hours required to weave a rug.

Maggie learned to weave from her grandmother, Mabel Archie. Mabel had come from a long line of exceptional weavers from the Pinon area of Arizona. From an early age, Maggie watched and assisted her grandmother in the creation of rugs from the care of the sheep, shearing the sheep, washing and carding of the wool and spinning of the wool by hand spindle.

She learned the secrets and mysteries of creating beautiful colors from the plants that surrounded them the in the desolate arid land of the Navajo.

She began to weave at the age of 12. Since that time, Maggie has grown into a master weaver. She weaves many types of Navajo rugs. Through her daughters who translate Navajo to English and English to Navajo for her, Maggie explains that the designs just come to her in her head as she sits down to weave. In 69 years of weaving her skills are stronger than ever.
