The oldest Navajo weavings available to the collector’s market can be dated back to the 1870’s or 1860’s. Navajo weavers take great pride in their work, being that their Navajo rugs are 100% handmade. Integrity and commitment is what you will get when purchasing an authentic Navajo hand-woven rug. When shopping for an antique Navajo rug, educate yourself by speaking with knowledgeable rug dealers and reviewing our tips below.

Educate Yourself

Read books, magazines, web sites, and speak to knowledgeable rug dealers and traders for a more confident purchase.  Visit AZADI Navajo Rugs in Sedona, AZ to speak with the knowledgeable staff and to see the amazing collection of antique and new Navajo weavings.

Assess Rug Fully Open and Flat

Navajo rugs may be authentic but not all show quality and craftsmanship. Examine every corner and both sides for defects, including parallel edges and square corners.

Check Design and Entire Rug

Check whether the design mirrors itself on the other side and know that true Navajo rugs should not be 100% perfect.

Check the Warp

Navajo rugs are made on a continuous loom that contains the actual vertically warped threads. You can check this visually by running your hand along the side of the rug to feel whether the warped threads run the length of the rug or whether they’ve been cut.

Look for Lazy Lines

Lazy lines appear as a diagonal line in the weave of the fabric. During the weaving process, the rug maker would move to work on adjacent sections of the warp, resulting in the subtle diagonal lines referred to as lazy lines. These lines would be almost impossible to detect by looking at a photograph of the rug online.
